This is where the school journey ends and the new adult life begins. Over the past two or three years as senior students they have taken on more responsibilities as the rites of childhood into adulthood became more distinct.
Most young people have some idea of the pathways they intend to pursue beyond school. Many will have done some sort of work experience in Years 9 or 10 and already have part-time jobs outside school.
For those who have completed the Year 12 exams it may mean an anxious wait for the results to see if they can take the academic route or university of their choice. Others will take up apprenticeships, go to TAFE or other learning institutions. Some may go straight into paid work. Others may take a "gap year" break and travel or do volunteer work overseas.
